What makes a professional photographer? Part 1

This is a question we are often asked, so we thought it would be a good idea to give you some insight into what makes a professional photographer, as well as provide you with some of the characteristics we see from so many of our customers. In this first part of the two posts, we will look at the products, processes, and samples we believe will help you stand out from the competition.

Within the professional photography market, there are so many genres: wedding, portrait, school, commercial, photojournalism, and advertising are just a few. You may find that you take various paths in your career until you find the one that is best suited to you. The most successful photographers build up an impressive portfolio of work within one specific area – something that few others do.

The possibilities are endless, and finding your niche is half the fun!

So, which genre of photography would you like to master? We will support you by giving helpful ‘must have’ advice into what we believe helps professional photographers stand out.

Professional Photographic Products

Most genres have the need for professionally printed and manufactured products. Once the image is created, edited, and sold to the client, most professional photographers pass their images onto a professional printing business. The files are then turned into high-quality albums, framed prints, portfolio products, or wall art.

All images are printed on high-grade paper in a professional photographic printing lab. The finishing touches are made with professional equipment and quality components and fixings. This ensures that with the right care, the product will remain pristine for many years.

We all know the disappointment of receiving a badly printed image in a shoddy frame that starts to fade and only lasts a few months. That is why you, as a professional photographer, should favour the best products to make sure your work is printed and finished to the highest standard.

If the printed image is well looked after, it can become an heirloom and admired for many, many years.

Colorworld Imaging has been printing and manufacturing professional prints and products for professional photographers in the UK for over 50 years. We have a team of time-served printers and production professionals who treat each job as their own.

We use the best components in our business, from the paper we print on, the printing machines we use, the quality cutting, and the binding and gluing equipment to make our product. We then have the highest level of quality control to ensure all products arrive to you in the best possible condition.  We are very proud to think our albums, books, portfolio boxes, framed prints and wall products are in many homes across the UK.

We know they have been and will be handled and enjoyed by many people and generations to come.

Professional Photographic and Album Samples

We are going to ask you to be completely honest. Sit in a well-lit area and have a good look at the product samples you are showing to your potential clients. Be meticulous and critical, then think ‘would I be happy to be on the other side of the table looking at these samples?’.

Shabby and aged samples will possibly stop any consideration of buying into your services and product portfolio.

So please, look closely at everything you have, be it albums, books, portfolios, framed prints, or wall art. Do they look perfect? If not, you must update them to keep them looking the best they can. Colorworld Imaging has many options available to help you show your work as it should be – perfect printing, perfect UK-based manufacturing, and all with a 6-year guarantee.

We have bespoke and ‘off the shelf’ product sample deals available. This means you should never have to show a product to a client with your fingers firmly crossed, hoping they won’t notice something.

What kind of professional photographic products and printing processes would a professional photographer use?

Your relationship with suppliers is crucial. You need to completely trust the supplier to enhance and bring to life your images. Choosing a professional photo lab based on its attitude, its products and most importantly its printing quality should be paramount to your business. Professional photo labs now make everything you need, from a loose print to a full wedding album to a superb wall product. It is important for these products to represent you in the best possible light whether that is in an album or on the wall in a client’s home.

The products that professional photo labs create are not usually available to the general public. The creation of them is intrinsically linked with your image and pre-selected samples which have been considerably invested in.

Professional photo labs like Colorworld Imaging use industrial photo printing processes and equipment coupled with high-grade quality media which ensures the character and longevity of the print. This ensures that it will be fit to turn into a finished product that will last for years and years.

Each one of these products is bespoke and individually printed, quality control checked, and then passed to a highly trained craftsman within the professional photo lab’s production team. They are cut, mounted, and produced using professional presentation products and then quality controlled again by the production team.

Finally, they are packed professionally prior to being shipped directly back to you to present to your clients.

You are the creator of the professional image. Professional photo labs like Colorworld Imaging are your personal production business therefore it should be a remarkably close relationship.

We hope you enjoyed this post and look out for part 2 on our blog shortly.
